These publications will include monthly reports that provide a brief overview of the political, security and humanitarian situation in the Greater Kasa&iuml; region, focusing particularly on Kasa&iuml; and Kasa&iuml; Central, as well as longer thematic reports. Through this new project, CRG will continue to shed light on this part of Democratic Republic of Congo that is still relatively unknown to national and international audiences,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=http-3A__congoresearchgroup.org_wp-2Dcontent_uploads_2018_07_Setting-2DFire-2Dto-2Dyour-2DOwn-2DHouse-2DCRG-2DFINAL.pdf&amp;d=DwMFaQ&amp;c=slrrB7dE8n7gBJbeO0g-IQ&amp;r=iDcJ6dgG_Hy1Vb__oQxtpw&amp;m=k-Zaw7ZITf9kkfbRVkyQWJ_wn7U_dDHGfJVYAk5ez-k&amp;s=rUDQi1Y5We8BIHmVI6mmmb3mPFtmocCy1SFLC5xs-k8&amp;e=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">despite the events of 2016 and 2017 triggered by Kamuina Nsapu groups<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:30px;padding-top:0px;padding-bottom:0px\" class=\"is-core-paragraph-block has-space-small-mb\">The first monthly report can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congoresearchgroup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kasai-Report-may19-EN-final.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:30px;padding-top:0px;padding-bottom:0px\" class=\"is-core-paragraph-block has-space-small-mb\">This first monthly report emphasizes that despite the reduction in violence beginning in 2018, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=https-3A__www.voaafrique.com_a_reddition-2Dde-2Dnombreux-2Dmiliciens-2Ddans-2Dle-2Dkasai-2D_4763633.html&amp;d=DwMFaQ&amp;c=slrrB7dE8n7gBJbeO0g-IQ&amp;r=iDcJ6dgG_Hy1Vb__oQxtpw&amp;m=k-Zaw7ZITf9kkfbRVkyQWJ_wn7U_dDHGfJVYAk5ez-k&amp;s=gLDz00j0zj4TlFUNfWT4G40AeNufuFcNCcqm_zStBFA&amp;e=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surrender of many armed groups following Felix Tshisekedi&rsquo;s election in early 2019, the potential for further clashes remains<\/a>. The most important factor that can influence whether violence resumes is the near total absence of sustainable disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) programs for combatants. The potential for the manipulation of these young, mostly unemployed men by politicians therefore remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:30px;padding-top:0px;padding-bottom:0px\" class=\"is-core-paragraph-block has-space-small-mb\">The report also underlines the dire need for development in this isolated region&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=https-3A__www.nrc.no_perspectives_2019_bloody-2Dwar-2Dand-2Dterror-2Dchase-2Dchildren-2Dinto-2Dthe-2Dbush_&amp;d=DwMFaQ&amp;c=slrrB7dE8n7gBJbeO0g-IQ&amp;r=iDcJ6dgG_Hy1Vb__oQxtpw&amp;m=k-Zaw7ZITf9kkfbRVkyQWJ_wn7U_dDHGfJVYAk5ez-k&amp;s=mXWzq7YjcjZ43XHdY_Hmw2n1kgkb5xAG34NBrWNpwhM&amp;e=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whose malnutrition rate is the highest in DRC<\/a>. While the immediate cause of the Kamuina Nsapu rebellion was the manipulation of customary authority by politicians, it quickly became an anti-state movement, symptomatic of the frustrations of many Kasa&iuml;ans who, rightly or wrongly, consider that their region has long been disproportionately neglected by the Congolese state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:30px;padding-top:0px;padding-bottom:0px\" class=\"is-core-paragraph-block has-space-small-mb\">President Tshisekedi&rsquo;s program for his first hundred days in office focused on road rehabilitation and electrification projects, including in Kasa&iuml;. But the work has begun with a whimper. At the same time, the Kasa&iuml;an people&rsquo;s expectations of the new president, who is himself from Kasa&iuml; Oriental, are enormous, and certainly too high compared to what he can achieve in a short time. What will be the future of Kasa&iuml; under these conditions?
